Panchakarma Treamtent

Panchakarma is cleansing of the body according to Ayurveda. Pancha in Sanskrit stands for Five and Karma are procedures, therefore Panchakarma means set of five fold specialized techniques of therapy for eliminating the toxic elements from the body and mind . This medical system emphasizes the holistic approach where the person’s whole body, mind and soul should be considered and not just the affected parts

Shirodhara

The Shirodhara technique soothes and invigorates the senses and the mind

Modern lifestyles lead to poor health in many ways. However, the use of simple and natural methods can significantly improve health and vitality. Purification therapy is a unique feature of Ayurveda involving the complete cleansing of body and thereby eliminating vitiated doshas. The technique effectively treats doshic balances in their advanced stages. Vitiated doshas causing blocked channels in a system, which needs purification, approach. Shirodhara is one of the great purification and rejuvenating therapy.

Shirodhara is an ancient Ayurvedic healing practice performed in India for over 5,000 years. The word shirodhara breaks down into two ideas: shiro, meaning head, and dhara which means flow. Together they form a concept that aims to bring physical and emotional balance by rejuvenating the spirit and preserving health. This is achieved through a relaxing technique in which warmed oil is poured over a client’s forehead for an extended period of time.

There are specialized forms of shirodhara called tailadhara, ksheeradhara, takradhara and jaladhara.

Shirodhara works primarily on the mental sheath or "manomaya kosha" as it is referred to in Ayurveda. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, harmonize vata constitutions, restore the nerves, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. In Ayurvedic Medicine, it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness. Shirodhara has been traditionally shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly affecting persons in today’s active lifestyle.

Vasti (oil bath) Therapies

Vasti therapies are used cleanse, relax, soothe, nourish and rejuvenate the body in localised areas known as Chakras or energy centers where multiple body systems and tissues intersect. In these localised Snehana therapies, a circular dam of medicated flour is sealed around the indicated area where constantly replenished warm medicated oils required according to the condition of patient are poured and kept. These oils are specifically prepared to penetrate deep into the tissues in order to soften, warm and detoxify these vital points which affect the whole body.

Kati vasti

Kativasti is a highly effective treatment for back pain and spinal disorders in which warm medicated oil is retained inside an herbal paste boundary over the lower back.

Kati Vasti helps to cure diseases like Chronic and acute backaches, Prolapsed disc, Lumbar Spondylosis, Osteoporosis, Sciatica pain etc.

Kati Vasti treatment helps to increase the blood circulation, strengthens muscle and connective tissues and lubricates the joints keeping them flexible and pain free. It stimulates and nourishes nerves relieving pain and numbness. Also it strengthens back muscles which maintain normal curvature of the spine.

Janu Vasti

Janu Vasti, a treatment of ayurveda provides a simple and still very effective relief of knee pain especially that which is caused due to Osteo Arthritis, cracking pain, injuries and degenerative conditions. It relives pain and stiffness and eases movements at the knee joint. Meanwhile it also strengthens the joint, muscles and soft tissues around, improves blood circulation and enables you to resume back your work and activities.

Knee joint is called as the Janu Sandhi in Sanskrit; hence the name Janu Vasti is given to the Vasti procedure done on Knee joints. In this procedure the healing property of the medicated oil used; are especially useful to restore the lubricant fluid in the joint and maintain integrity of the structures involved in the joint.

Greeva Vasti

Greeva refers to the neck region where the dough ring is filled with constantly replenished warm medicated oil. Once the dough ring is removed, the area is thoroughly massaged paying specific attention to the Marma points in the area.

Greeva Vasti has been traditionally used to help: neck and shoulder pain; cervical spondylosis; headaches; migraines; muscle spasm; scoliosis; slipped disc; disc prolapse and whiplash. Optimal benefits are experienced after a series of therapies.


Chakra Vasti

Chakra Vasti is an oil therapy for the abdomen. The oil filled medicated dough ring is kept around the center of the belly and is filled with constantly replenished warm medicated oil. Once the dough ring is removed, the area is thoroughly massaged paying specific attention to the Marma points in the area. Please do not eat for 1-2 hours prior to this therapy.

Benefits: The gastro-intestinal tract produces many of the same chemicals as the brain and reacts to one’s feelings and emotions. This treatment helps in relieving deep rooted physical and emotional tensions stored in the digestive tract and helps to relieve many digestive disorders. This is also the main site of pitta in the body and agni (metabolic fire) where enzymes, acids and hormones are produced all of which are balanced by Chakra Vasti. Optimal benefits are experienced after a series of therapies.

Uro Vasti

Uro Vasti is administered to the Uras or the central chest region. The oil filled medicated dough ring is kept around the center of the chest and is filled with constantly replenished warm medicated oil. Once the dough ring is removed, the area is thoroughly massaged paying specific attention to the Marma points in the area (includes breast massage).

Benefits: This treatment has been traditionally used to help: regulating the respiratory, circulatory and lymphatic systems; asthma; respiratory problems; heart problems; muscular chest pain and spasms; breast and lymphatic disorders and emotional trauma. Optimal benefits are experienced after a series of therapies.

Merudanda Vasti

Merudanda refers to the entire spine region where a medicated dough dam is filled with constantly replenished warm medicated oil. Once the dough dam is removed, the area is thoroughly massaged paying specific attention to the Marma points of the spine. Please do not eat for 1-2 hours prior to this treatment.

Benefits: Merudanda basti has been traditionally used to help: slipped disc; disc prolapse; spinal degeneration; muscle spasms and pain; injuries; scoliosis; lordosis; kyphosis; neck and shoulder pain; low and mid back problems; sciatica; spondylosis; paralysis and arthritis. Netra Vasti

In today’s world we are bombarded with optical stimuli, our eyes are often strained and overtired, creating adverse effects on our vision and brain activity. Netra Vasti has a relaxing effect on the eyes and surrounding tissues. This therapy begins with a light facial massage, emphasizing the Marma points around the eyes and lymph nodes. Afterwards medicated dough rings are carefully placed around each eye to form a dam. The eyes are then bathed in warm Medicated Ghee (Medicated clarified butter). As the eyes are nurtured and revitalized, Marma points on your hands are gently massaged and eye exercises are performed. A rest period of one hour prior to any excessive stimulation of the eyes is suggested after this.

Benefits: This oil bath for your eyes has been traditionally used to help: improve eyesight; relieve tension, fatigue, ocular headaches and migraines; flush the tear ducts; balance the nervous system; smooth away wrinkles; relieve eye strain from constant glaring into the computer or television screen; drooping of eyelids; night blindness; cataract; blurred vision; near or short sightedness; astigmatism; stiffness and roughness of eyes; injury to eyes; subconjunctival hemorrhage; inflammatory lesions of the eyes; glaucoma; corneal ulcers; pain in the eyes and tear deficiency. Ela kizhi (Patrapotala Sweda)

And

Podi Kizhi (Choorna Swedam)


Podi Kizhi and Ela Kizhi are treatments in Ayurvedic health program, especially for inflammatory conditions of the bones and joints, arthritis, spinal problems, spondylosis and muscular pains. A bolus bag of herbs, leaves or powder of herbs are applied along with warm medicated oil all over the body for a duration of 45 to 60 minutes.

This therapy begins with the application of suitable medicated oil to the entire body. The body is then subjected to exude profusely through a massage with boluses of chopped and fried leaves of some specific medicinal herbs after dipping in particular medicated oils.

This therapy is effective for various kinds of arthritis, spondylosis, back pain, sports injuries and for all other soft tissue inflammations especially join pains.

ELAKIZHI is an innovative classical massage with medicated leaves and is used to tackle joint pain, muscle cramps, stress and arthritis. All the above-mentioned treatments can be done in a perfectly healthy person as well so as to enhance his/her immunity, vitality and longevity of life. Each of these combinations give a curative and rejuvenative effect after being undergone for definite periods and repeating at definite intervals. Herbal poultices (bundles) are prepared with various herbs and medicated powders. The poultices are warmed in medicated oils and used to massage the entire body, neck, shoulders, hand and back, shifting the person from side to side. The massage can promote better circulation within the affected area thereby promoting increased perspiration, which helps the skin to eliminate wastes. This treatment is also known by the name Patrapotala Swedam.


Navara Kizhi (Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda)

Navara Kizhi is one of the important treatment modalities which is used as a swedana karma. Navara kizhi is a type of bhrimhana Sweda or nourishing therapy.

Shastika Shali(Navara) Means rice which is grown in 60 days. This rice with special medicinal values is used as main ingredient in the procedure and so the name Shastika Shali or Navara. Pinda means a bolus. Sweda means Fomentation or sudation.

A bolus which is prepared with the medicated rice along with the other herbal medicines used for sudation is called Navara Kizhi or Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda.

Skin is a large, highly complex organ and structurally integrated organ system and the component of the skin are cutaneous membrane associated with hair, nails and exocrine glands, the cutaneous membrane has two components, superficial epithelium or epidermis and the underlying connective tissue of the dermis. The function of the skin is supported by an extensive network of blood vessels branch, and sensory receptors that monitor touch, pressure, temperature and pain.

When the procedure starts, due to the increased temperature which is more than 2 to 3 c and because of the pharmacological action of the medicine vasodilatation will happen all over the body. As a result of vasodilatation an increased flow of blood through the area occurs so that the necessary oxygen and nutritive materials are supplied and toxins are removed. The active ingredients of medicinal herbs helps to act as muscular relaxants, reduces the pain, inflammation and stiffness

This therapy produces sudation effect because of the medicinal action and temperature and act as a counter irritant which is the thermal stimulus and may affect the pain sensation. It also induces muscles relaxation and increases the efficiency of muscle action as the increased blood supply ensures the optimum condition for muscle contraction. That is because both eccrine and apocrine sweat glands are innervated by postganglionic sympathetic fibres that helps to have control on limbic system.

Pinda Sweda (Shastik Sala )is an important treatment that is both a nourishing and detoxifying treatment. The treatment is heating to melt toxins in the body without aggravating pitta. It helps to rectify Osteo and Rheumatoid Arthritis, muscle pain and stiffness, improves circulation, and helps with sleep. The boluses contain herbs, natural whole rice, herbal oil, and then cooked in organic milk for many hours. These boluses are then applied to the patient.

Pizhicil (Thailadhara)

This therapy is a beautiful combination of two classical Ayurvedic treatments, Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (Sudation). The whole body is bathed in streams of lukewarm medicated oil with simultaneous soft massage. Two therapists attend to the client, focusing on their particular needs. More than three liters of relaxing, medicated oil is used in this therapy.

Pizhicil protects the body from illnesses and builds up immunity for a healthy life. It is very useful for rheumatic diseases, arthritis, paralysis, sexual weakness, neurological disorders, blood pressure, nervous weakness and helps to arrest the aging process.

Pizhichil actually helps in initiating diaphoresis (heavy sweating) and hence is highly effective in rheumatic diseases, arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia, paralysis-agitans (parkinson’s disease), sexual weakness, nervous weakness, nervous disorders etc.

Other benefits: Relieves body pain and muscle spasms, helps in the healing of fractured bones, increases immunity and prolongs lifespan, promotes development of muscles, improves skin complexion, has anti aging properties, improves blood circulation, helps in diabetes, hypertension, effective in asthma and even in tuberculosis in early stages, soothing and relaxing, helps preserve and promote optimum health, is very rejuvenating, and alleviates burning sensation in the body.


Nasyam

One of the Panchakarmas mentioned in Ayurveda, Nasya therapy is a process wherein the drug (herbalized oils and liquid medicines) is administered through the nostrils. Since nose is the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases pertaining to the head, if it is performed systematically. The therapy cleanses and opens the channels of the head, thereby improving the process of oxygenation (prana), which has a direct influence on the functioning of brain. The therapy is beneficial if done on a regular basis, because it keeps the eyes, nose and ear healthy. It also prevents the early graying of hair and bear.

Thalam

Thalam is an ideal treatment for ENT problems, Insomnia, semi-paralysis of the face, migraine, reduces blood pressure and combats modern life style diseases like lack of concentration, lack of sleep etc. Special Ayurveda oil mixed with herbal powder retained on top of the head for certain duration to give you a soothing effect.

Thalam is the Malayalam name for the treatment of retaining medicines over the center of the head with the help of a cap. It helps in nourishing the brain cells to prevent brain cell damage thus reducing the mental problems. In this process, a medicated paste is applied on the top of head and left for about 20 minutes. The mental stress faced by the people in today’s time has resulted in multiple problems and Thalam Ayurvedic therapy is directed to treat the conditions like lack of willpower, inability to concentrate, etc.

Thalam is applied to both men and women for the treatment of conditions like insomnia, weak sight, skin problems, throat problems, migraine, etc. It is also helpful for patients suffering from the diseases of facial paralysis, eyes and other neurological problems. Shirovasti

Shirovasti is known to balance the factors the cause insomnia, and is effective in neutralizing anxiety, depression, travels stress and brain-related or hormonal imbalances.

Some kinds of headaches are well-treated with shirovasti therapy, as well as Bells palsy, some sinus conditions and certain neurological disorders that affect the senses.

Sirovasti even softens facial wrinkles.

Shirovasti is a specialized treatment in which medicated oils are administered on the head. A leather cap is kept on the head of the patient and a certain mixture of the lukewarm herbal oils is poured into this cap. The oil is allowed to remain inside the cap for about 45 minutes and then it is drained out.

To be more precise, a special hat, preferably made of leather is fixed around the head just above the ear and eyebrow, and the joint between the head and hat is made leak proof. On to this positioned hat lukewarm oil is poured and is allowed to remain there for a prescribed period.

It is beneficial in mantel related disorder, like alleviating anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, mental stress, head ache, and travel stress.

Thalapothichil

Treatment is renowned for its ability to heal problems related to the head and neck regions. Alzheimer's disease, migraine, certain psychosomatic diseases, arthritis, headache, insomnia, mental illness, hyper tension, sinusitis etc. are some of the most common ailments treated using this method. In Thalapothichil, the person's scalp is completely applied with high value medicinal pastes. This enables the medicines to penetrate faster into the brain cells. The healing properties of the herbs also calm down the nervous system and rejuvenate the person. To start the treatment, the person sits on a chair, well relaxed. Selected medicinal herbs, thoroughly ground and made into fine paste, is then thickly applied on to his scalp. The head is then covered up with leaves, usually banana leaves, to form a perfect mask. This is done to allow the medicines to stay on and function well. The mask remains on the person's head for almost 40 to 50 minutes giving wonderful relaxation to the mind. The effect of the medicines calms down the nerves, relieves mental tension, increases the person's memory power and improves his sleep pattern.

Pichu

A thick layer of cotton wool soaked with warm medicated oil is applied over the affected area. The oil is recycled periodically to make it warm. This therapy is very effective for degenerative and painful problems like Back pain, Osteo-arthritis, Spondylitis, injuries, etc. Pichu is a palliative treatment for ailments of the head and spine. During this treatment, a long, thick layer of cotton wool soaked with warm medicated oil is applied over the affected area. The oil is replaced periodically to keep it warm and therapeutic. Pichu, one of the Purvakarma therapies, is considered an effective treatment for diseases of the cranial nerves arising from Vata disorder. This therapy is very effective for degenerative and painful spinal problems. Pichu is associated with Ayurvedic oil massage therapy. It includes pressing parts body with cloth dipped in warm medicated oil. It is applied over areas that require treatments for different conditions. Partial paralysis, rheumatism, and symptoms associated with nervous disorders are treated this way. Siropichu means pichu given to siras or head. It is pichu therapy given to the head. It has different applications like cure to hair loss, increase eyesight, relieve stess, etc. Short, gentle and rhythmic massage strokes followed by a medicated herbal pack further alleviate stress and enhance the healing process.
